Anxious to steer clear of a replicate of the snow-interrupted Milan-San Remo, the organizers of Sunday’s Gent-Wevelgem will undertake a reconnaissance trip over the 235 km course on Saturday to investigate of it is fit to host a race given snow bouts have been occurring in the region in the 24 hours preceding the Flanders Classic.

A variety of emergency strategies can be implemented should the need arise and the organizers have announced that a meeting with the teams is scheduled for 3 pm on Saturday afternoon to discuss the race and any alterations that may have to be made to the parcours.

"We will not make the mistake of Milan-San Remo" race director, Frank Hoste told Het Nieuwsblad. "The health and safety of the riders have priority."

Saturday morning saw snow falling in the region before conditions cleared up a few hours later. More snow was originally forecast for Sunday but modified signs are that temperatures will continue to hover from -2 to 3 degrees and no snow should fall on race day.

A selection of options remains available for the organizers who have denied rumours that the WorldTour event will be postponed for Monday.
