The last stage of Tour of Austria was characterized by many attacks and high speed racing. CULT Energy Pro Cycling was represented in most of the breakaways.
Karel Hnik was part of the first attack, consisting of 7 riders. The group was caught just before the first mountain. Soon after a new group of 6 riders broke clear. Linus Gerdemann managed to join the group and it looked like they could make to the finish line.
The group hit a hard headwind and decided to wait for the chasing 10-man group. The group was eventually caught by the peloton.
35km from the finish, Gerdemann attacked again and was joined by 5 other riders. The speed was so high that the group was reduced to 3 riders. With just 3km to go,t the group was caught and it seemed like it would end in a bunch sprint. Troels Vinther was ready in the highly reduced peloton, protected by Karel Hnik. But unfortunately he had a puncture just before the 2km mark.
Hnik finished 12th..
Sports director André Steensen says:
“Today was a great race and several times it looked like we had a chance of a victory. After all, even though we didn’t get into the top 3, we can be proud of our aggressive racing and that our tactic of creating an uncontrolled race succeeded."
