The 37th edition of the Bayern-Rundfahrt (May 25-29, 2016) is at risk. On Monday, the organizers of Germany's only stage race announced that they currently have a budget shortfall of 300,000 euros. If they are unable to find the money before December 20, the race will be canceled.
"We have a responsibility towards our partners, in particular with respect to the stage towns and the teams that need reliable planning for the coming year. Therefore, we need to decide before the end of this year whether the race can take place or not," said Tour chief Ewald Strohmeier in a press release.
A cancellation for next year would not necessarily mean the end of the Bayern Rundfahrt, Strohmeier emphasized. "We will fight to continue the Bayern-Rundfahrt as a successful and attracttive race in 2017," he said. "We want to continue our commitment so that Germany the many professional sports have a future in Germany and so that Germany can continue to produce internationally successful cyclists."
