With his internal team rival at Orica-Greenedge Michael Matthews set to move on in 2017, Simon Gerrans is negotiating a new deal with the Aussie team.
Gerrans penned a three year deal in 2014, but year three of that deal was optional and not guaranteed. The veteran two time-Monument winner is waiting to see if he makes the team’s Tour de France squad before committing to the third season.
“It’s not certain about the Tour,” Gerrans told Cyclingnews. “There’s still a long-list of riders for the team. I’m more focused on getting ready for the Tour rather than getting selected for the Tour. I guess they’ll make a decision on that after the Tour de Suisse.”
Gerrans, a winner of a stage and yellow jersey wearer in the 2013 Tour, says he hasn’t done any recon rides of Tour stages, but looking at the profiles he says there aren’t many that suit him.
“I’ve not ridden any but I’ve had a look at the profiles for this year and unfortunately there’s not a huge amount of stages that suit my characteristics," he said. "There are a few in the first week and then some in the transitional stages.”
The 36 year old also gave a small update on his contract situation to Cyclingnews.
“It’s something we’re working through at the moment. It’s all up in the air at the moment. Of course I’ve had great history and it’s been a great team here but I can’t share anything. There’s nothing decided yet and we still have time to make a final decision. There’s nothing new.”
