Robert Gesink was one of the strongest men in the 107th Il Lombardia today. In the Italian elimination race, the Dutchman of the Belkin Pro Cycling Team held on until the line in Lecco. Between the falling leaves.
Gesink claimed an excellent tenth place and Katusha’s Joaquim Rodriguez took the win.
“I did a good race,” said Gesink. “I lost connection with the best four in the final kilometres, but in the sprint I was able to take a good tenth place. You can also end 14th or 15th in a sprint like that, so this is fine. I think I performed at my limits. I’m satisfied.”
Important work by Clement
Stef Clement was part of a serious breakaway of 21 riders along the way. The peloton had to work hard to catch the group.
“Because I was up there, we couldn’t lose control. Now no one could look to us in the chase. That was important,” he said to the Belkin webpage.
Joker
Sports Director Nico Verhoeven was delighted with Clement’s work. Laurens ten Dam, Marc Goos and Tom-Jelte Slagter received praise, as well.
“They helped Robert until late in the race. Unfortunately, Lars Petter Nordhaug’s legs were not yet fully recovered after the worlds, he would’ve been our joker for today. Unfortunately, another very good rider [Bauke Mollema] for us was at home with knee problems.”
Goos enjoys Il Lombardia
Marc Goos raced his first Il Lombardia. The youngster had a fun day in the rain.
"I think this is one of the finest races out there. It has always appealed to me. I was called up as a reserve very late so riding here was kind of a surprise for me but it was super. At the foot of the Sormano, I dropped off Robert at the front and after that I managed to reach the finish line in a strong group.”
