Robert Gesink continues his strong showing in the Tour of Oman after finishing with the best riders in yesterday's tough stage. He is now ready to the big showdown on the Green Mountain where he is a past winner.
Belkin Pro Cycling Team’s Robert Gesink placed 14th in stage four of the Tour of Oman, outside the country’s Ministry of Housing. The Dutchman lost only two seconds to stage winner Peter Sagan of team Cannondale. He sits tenth overall now, 18 seconds behind the Slovakian race leader.
Gesink depended on his team-mates today.
“Jetse Bol worked hard to reel in a strong break,” Gesink said. “The other guys did well keeping me in the front and out of the wind. It was partly due to them that I was able to keep up with the better riders, so I’m satisfied with this result.”
Gesink kept his cool in the hectic final kilometres. He was able to limit the damage when Sagan attacked in the downhill to the line, along with Rigoberto Uran (Omega Pharma-Quick Step) and Vincenzo Nibali (Astana).
“I worked hard to close the gap with some others. From what I could see it looked like Sagan, Uran and Nibali were sent the wrong direction in the final kilometres, so that helped us. Sagan still managed to win but the difference was small in the end.”
The famous Green Mountain stage, the queen stage, sits on the horizon today. Gesink cherishes his memories of 2011. He won the stage up Green Mountain which set him up for the overall victory.
“I expect that Sky will take the initiative on Green Mountain tomorrow,” Gesink said. “The road is pretty wide, so positioning won’t be a factor. I will do everything to finish among the first.”
