Today the Six-Days of Ghent will offer a big final showdown. Organizer Patrick Sercu looks back at the race with satisfaction. "Nearly all the riders have fulfilled what was expected of them." Also organizer Rob Discart is a happy man.
"If I have to take stock of the sporting aspect I can only be satisfied", Sercu told Sporza. "Nearly all the riders have fulfilled what was expected of them."
The organizers made a coup when the could present the pair of Iljo Keisse and Mark Cavendish. They have been the big drawcard for the Six-Day event.
"In the beginning Iljo Keisse was not at his best" Sercu said. "Fortunately, he has been going full gas since Thursday.
"Also his teammate Mark Cavendish had until tried to find the rhythm. Remember that he has not been riding on the track for a long time. From Thursday, he found the pace and he has been able to rely on his technical skills as a track rider.
"Jasper de Buyst/Kenny De Ketele and Leif Lampater/Silvan Dilier have also been riding an excellent six-day. I also have words of praise for the performance of Moreno De Pauw and Otto Vergaerde. These young guys have a very interesting future in the Six-Day races.
"From the Spanish world champions I expected more. Perhaps the lack of competition is the reason. But I can not be unhappy with the performance of the riders during the last six days and night in Het Kuipke."
Also organizer Rob Discart was satisfied with the spectacle at Het Kuipke.
"I think we can describe this edition as one of the best in recent years", Discart told Spora.
"The presence of Mark Cavendish provided the necessary atmosphere and ambiance. He has been riding with another popular rider in the Gentse Kuipke, Iljo Keisse. They have been appreciated tremendously by the audience but so have the other pairs. Immediately, I think of Jasper de Buyst and Kenny De Ketele."
