Team Giant-Alpecin has had to pull out of the Dwars door Vlaanderen semi-classic. Four of the team’s six riders have been stranded as a consequence of the terrorist attacks in Brussles. Four riders are required to start a race.
There were no representatives for the team present at the meeting for directeur sportives in Waregem on Tuesday evening but organisers confirmed to Cyclingnews that Giant-Alpecin would be unable to make the start due to having only two riders.
Chad Haga (who was due to make his return to racing after the offseason crash that derailed the teams spring season) and Caleb Fairly were coming in from Spain and Frederik Ludvigsson from Sweden but their respective flights were cancelled due to the bombings.
The team only had six rides due to the fact that so many riders are missing due to the aforementioned training camp crash and they have a busy schedule with the Volta a Catalunya going on and E3, Gent-Wevelgem and the Criterium International coming up. The crash also forced the team to pull out of Omloop Het Nieuwsblad earlier this year as they didn’t have enough riders to field a team.
Movistar were also affected, only putting Andrey Amador, Fran Ventoso, Jasha Sutterlin and Juanjo Lobato on the startline due to four others having delayed flights.
