Philippe Gilbert of BMC has weighed in on the debate on using disc brakes in the professional peloton.
The Belgian 2012 World Champion says that he fears falling on dics more than he does falling on a chainring. He also said that in order for them to be safe, the whole peleton would need to move onto them.
“You need to have everyone ready at the same time, because you could not have some on disc brakes and others not,” Gilbert said during a team camp last month to VeloNews. “The braking distance on a disc brake might be 10 meters, and on other brakes, 20 meters. With 17 WorldTour teams, and the Professional Continental teams, do you think everyone could be ready at the same time?”
“If you land on a disc brake, it’s warm, it can open you up. If you get it on a vein … boof,” Gilbert said. “I am worried about the security. It’s not the same as a chain ring. I would be more scared about a disc brake.”
He also says disc brakes would be more hassle for the mechanics on each team as everything would need to be changed.
“You would have to adapt all of the tubes, tires, everything,” Gilbert said. “Now they are made for the brakes we have now. It’s complicated [to change].”
