Omar Fraile will again do the double of the Giro d’Italia and Vuelta a Espana in 2017 according to Spanish newspaper Marca.
The former Caja Rural rider made himself known in 2015 by winning the Giro dell’Appenninno, the stage to Cassel at the 4 Days of Dunkerque and the mountains jersey at the Vuelta. Having joined thee WorldTour with Dimension Data for 2016, he made his debut at the Giro. He wore the first mountains jersey at the end of the second stage in the Netherlands, but then crashed in the fourth stage, the first in Italy, and abandoned the following day.
Returning to his home country, he did not lose sight of his objectives, the mountains jerseys at the Vuelta a Burgos and Vuelta a Espana which he won with a small advantage over Kenny Elissonde. The pair had a fantastic duel and Fraile only took the jersey in the last mountain stage, the day before Madrid.
Before the Giro, Fraile should return to the Volta ao Algarve before continuing at Paris-Nice, Coppi e Bartali and finally the Ardennes classics before leaving for Sardinia. He may also take part in the Tour of the Basque Country (between Coppi e Bartali and the classics).
