Having made his grand tour debut in this year's Giro d'Italia, Wilco Kelderman is ready to make the next step in 2014. The young Dutchman plans to ride both the Giro and the Vuelta a Espana, with the GC in the Italian grand tour being a major target.
Wilco Kelderman has long been regarded as one of the brightest Dutch stage racing talents. Next year he not only plans to target the GC in a grand tour for the first time, he even plans to ride two three-week races.
After a successful first season in 2012, Kelderman made his grand tour debut in this year's Giro d'Italia. He rode in support of Robert Gesink but still managed to finish 17th overall. Later in the year, he won his first stage race as a professional when he triumphed in the Tour of Denmark.
He has already made it clear that he will try to see how far he can get in the GC in next year's Giro but he now reveals that he plans a heavy race schedule. The 22-year-old would like to end his season by riding the Vuelta a Espana.
'' That's the idea, at least as I see it now," he told Wielerrevue. "If I look at it, it is not really a goal to go there [to the Vuelta] to ride for the GC but it could be.
"I will do less races between the two tours," he added. "If you have a long training period during the Tour de France and then rides either the Tour of Poland or the Eneco Tour, you can also do the Vuelta. I think it is possible."
Kelderman has no intentions of making his debut at the Tour in 2014 where the Belkin captains are likely to be Bauke Mollema and Gesink. With today's announcement that the 2015 edition of the race will start in the Utrecht in his home country, he would, however, love to make his maiden appearance one year later.
"To be able to start my first Tour there would be super nice," he said. "It would be kind of a dream to start close to my house. It would be really great!"
Kelderman ended his season by finishing 18th in the Tour of Beijing.
