The 2017 Giro del Trentino will get a small makeover. The stage race will now go enter the Italian province of South Tyrol and the Austrian state of Tyrol. To reach all these places, the race will last one day longer. The Giro del Trentino will therefore be a five-day race.
Together with Alto Adige and Tyrol, Trentino is a so-called Euroregion . This is a cross-border partnership of areas located in the European Union. The new stage race will no longer be called Giro del Trentino. A new name will be announced soon.
"After reaching the 40 years threshold we had the opportunity to take on a new challenge," said GS Alto Garda President and former MEP Giacomo Santini. "Over the years, we have established very positive cooperation with Trentino's neighbours, particularly in Eastern Tyrol where several Giro del Trentino stages have finished. Trentino remains the event's homeland, but the connection established with Südtirol and Austrian Tirol moves in the direction of a more powerful event, that will be able to live up to the tradition of excellence we have built in our history, and possibly exceed it."
Next year the 2.HC race will be held from the 17th to April 21st. This year, the victory went to Mikel Landa. The Giro del Trentino is traditionally an important preparation race for the Giro d'Italia.
