According to BiciCiclismo, after tha last edition of the race affected by an unfortunate coincidence, the Tour of the Apennines could return to Geneva in an upcoming year. The organizers of the Pontedecimo, have reached an agreement with the regional councilor Matthew Rossi, to bring the finish line to via XX Settembre where, in 2014, the 75th birthday of the Ligurian race should be celebrated.
As a reminder, Giro dell’Apennino is semi classic held in the Appenine Mountains, with Fausto Coppi, Francesco Moser and Gilberto Simoni among its most renowned winners, while the most recent editions were won by Vincenzo Nibali (2009), Robert Kiserlovski (2010), Damiano Cunego (2011), Fabio Felline (2012) and Davide Mucelli (2013).
An unfortunate coincidence connected with Giro dell’Appenino overlapping the “Derby della Lanterna” between Genoa and Sampdoria , forced organizers last year to move the event from its original date to July 14, the Bastille Day, what badly affected the race. With all lights turned to Tour the France during the French National Day, it was impossible for the organizers to achieve satisfying publicity. On the occasion, the race was won by Italian Davide Mucelli of Ceramika Flaminia – Fondriest team during its traditional finish.
