The final outcome of the jubilee Liege-Bastogne-Liege 100th edition was highly satisfying for the Omega Pharma-Quick Step team, as Michał Kwiatkowski concluded the monument with second consecutive podium spot taken in Ardennes classics. However, the Belgian team suffered a lot of bad luck on the 267 kilometer-long route of the hilly race, with in-form Jan Bakelants missing the finale after being forced to change his bike twice and Michał Gołaś pulling out of competition in a crash.
Following yesterday’s accident, Gołaś was subjected to more detailed tests done by the Omega Pharma-Quick Step medical staff this morning and it turned out that Polish rider suffered a fracture of his left scaphoid in a crash.
According to Spanish media, the 29-year old Pole will be forced out of competition for at least two weeks before undergoing another tests to assess the development of his recovery.
“I was in the first part of the group on the Haute Levee,” Gołaś recalled, “But then Rui Costa suddenly went down in front of me. I didn’t have any time to react and stop the bike, I hit the deck instantly.”
“It’s a shame because I was in a good shape and could have been useful for Kwiatkowski in the finale, but that’s how cycling is sometimes. Now all I have to do is to take a recovery period and then sit down with a team to reschedule my race programme.”
