Golden kilometers will be included in the Eneco Tour. Race organizer Rob Discart recalls the success of the experiment in the Tour of Belgium and now he wants to introduce in the Dutch/Belgian World Tour contest.

The golden kilometer is a new concept where you can earn bonus seconds in any kilometer between 20 to 25 kilometers from the finish. Within a kilometer there are three intermediate sprints. The winner will receive three bonus seconds, two seconds for the man in second and the third, one second. In total you can therefore collect nine seconds in a kilometre. Greg van Avermaet won the final standings in the Tour of Belgium thanks to the seconds he gathered in the gold kilometer of the final stage.

"You see cyclists riding for these special bonus seconds, causing the race to be faster and more exciting," says Discart in De Telegraaf. "Saturday Van Avermaet put here a basis for a good ranking in the final stage and rode away with the two best in the race at the golden kilometer. This experiment has been so successful that we are going to continue it at the Eneco Tour in August.”
