With strong performances in both the Giro dell Emilia aand the Gran Premio Bruno Beghelli, Roompot Orange Peloton animated their first races in Italy. Especially Maurits Lammertink delivered after solid support from his teamates, with a view to possible participation in the Giro d'Italia next year.
After a rest day on Friday, the riders ha digested the Coppa Sabatini well. Around a rainy Bologna, they were in several breakaways on Saturday in the Giro dell Emilia. "It was not easy," Lammertink said after the finish on top of the steep wall at the Santuari di San Luca. "Especially because of the rain and cold. All day in the final I was able to stay with the first, but towards the end I had to let them go." Jan Bakelants won solo and with an 11th place Lammertink finished just outside the top 10.
Furthermore, Huub Duijn was 27th and Michel Kreder 29th. Etienne van Empel had bad luck. After a crash he ended his day in the hospital. Injuries to the knee and eye socket ensured that the Dutchman could not start in the last of the trio of Italian autumn classics.
In the GP Beghelli, Van Meirhaeghe and Kudus were the escapees of the day. No less than 134 kilometers the duo remained in front. The two were caught in the final lap around Monteveglio. Soon after, Reinier Honig attacked, but his effort was short-lived. The action exemplited the tactic Erik Breukink had planned for the first races in Italy. "We would like to show ourselves," said the sports directot. "I think we have a good week behind us and left a good impression."
After the last climb of the Zappolino, Sonny Colbrelli was the strongest in the Gran Premio Bruno Beghelli. Maurits Lammertink was the best Roompotrider. He was 10th. "I am definitely happy with this final races of the season. It forms a nice end to a very successful first year of Roompot Orange Peloton," he said.
Behind Lammertink a quartet of teammates finished . Michel Kreder (11th), Sjoerd van Ginneken (12th), Huub Duijn (15th) and Mike Terpstra (16th) highlighted the good debut in Italian competitions.
