"With Mirko and Kevin we had good riders up front but Cannondale had four, including their sprinter Elia Viviani. I can't ask Mirko to beat Viviani. We have raced to our maximum ability. I am happy with eighth place."

Wanty went into the Coppa Bernocchi with Danilo Napolitano and Jerome Baugnies as their designated captains. As the race turned out to be harder than usual, it was Mirko Selvaggi who took a top 10 result for the Belgian team.

Mirko Selvaggi finished eighth today in the Coppa Bernocchi, a UCI 1.1 race won by Cannondale's Elia Viviani. Selvaggi, one of the two Italians on the team was in the first group where Kevin Seeldraeyers was also present for Wanty-Groupe Gobert. He finished 19th.

"This race normally ends in a bunch kick or with a smaller group," sports director Steven de Neef explains." Today it was the smaller group scenario. We had two of our riders in it. The ideal situation would have been to have one more like Jérome Baugnies."

The 190,3 kilometre race started with a breakaway of four riders without any Wanty-Groupe Gobert representation. After the first half course in line, the race continued with seven local loops. The four-man breakaway was caught.

"With Mirko and Kevin we had good riders up front but Cannondale had four, including their sprinter Elia Viviani. I can't ask Mirko to beat Viviani. We have raced to our maximum ability. I am happy with eighth place."

Tomorrow the team will ride the Coppa Agostini.

"It's comparable to today's race with a race in line, followed by local loops. But this one is a bit harder, I think. I hope to have Mirko and Kevin at the front again and also Baugnies. If Michel Kreder feels good he should be able to be up front too," De Neef concludes.
