Alexis Gougeard (Ag2r) was impressive in the final stage of the Tour de l'Eurometropole where he comfortably secured the overall win after having led the race since the prologue.
"I did it today, but it was not easy," he told Directvelo. "They were many up several me. I knew Lotto-Soudal would catch breakaways before the intermediate sprints. I felt good. I wanted to show them that they had to fight to get the jersey. I have defended all week with the team. I did not want to lose it.
"This is my first win in a stage race with the professionals. I hope others will follow. It was stressful but it teaches me how to ride smarter."
