There may still be hope for the GP Miguel Indurain to go on this year. Organisers have until tomorrow to see if they can gather together the funds to make the race happen.
On Thursday it was announced that the race would be cancelled but the Government of Navarra announced that it would help fund the race in order to keep it going. According to biciciclisimo.com, the organisers CC Estalla are waiting till tomorrows deadline to see if the government will come through with the funding.
The race takes about 60,00 euros to run and the City of Estalla provides 25,00 to go with 30,000 in other contributions. The city council has indicated that they would provide another 10,00 euros to keep the race alive and due to bureaucratic delays, the payments haven’t arrived yet.
In recent years the race has come to be known as the curtain raiser for Basque cycling as it fell a week before the Tour of the Basque Country and the GP Amorebieta, with the Clasica San Sebastian coming later in the year.
There are many big name winners including Indurain himself, Pedro Delgado, Samuel Sanchez, Joaquim Rodriguez and Daniel Moreno. Last year’s edition was won by Simon Spilak of Katusha and the race is currently ranked 1.1 in the UCI calendar.
Should the race go ahead this year, it will be on the 5th of April.
