Even though it was announced last week that the 2014 edition of GP Miquel Indurain will be cancelled due to financial problems following the fate of numerous Spanish one day races, the history will have an unexpected happy ending as the sad news encourages a private sponsor to save the event.
The race was to be folded after a regional government of Navarra failed to provide GP Miguel Indurain with sufficient financial support, but as it was recently announced by the organizers – CC Estrella, a private company stepped in to ensure a continuity of the event.
It was first reported that the one day event would be moved in the UCI calendar, but now it is set to be held as planned on April 5th.
“We’ve covered the core budget. If we can raise more money, that would be welcome so as to have more teams and better infrastructure,” CC Estrella president Echavarri told Biciciclismo. Further details will be announced at a press conference next week.
According to Biciciclismo, city of Estrella will contrubite 10.000 euro to race’s budget and there is still some money expected to come from Navarra’s regional government, but Echavarri hopes for more secure funding in the future as organizers were forced to wait until the last moment before confirming budget since 2011.
The one-day race used as a preparation event ahead of the Vuelta al Pais Vasco and GP Amorebieta was run fot the first time in 1951 and renamed as GP Miguel Indurain to honor the five time Tour the France champion in 1999.
The race, categorizes as an UCI 1.1 event, was won by Slovenian Simon Spilak, but the list of the winners contains the stars of the discipline in the likes of Stefano Garzelli, Joaquim Rodriguez or Samuel Sanchez.
