Brenton Jones powered to a close second place today at the Tour of Hainan Stage 4, with a sensational lead out by the Drapac Sprint Train. Jones showed his premium speed in the slight pitched up finale after a 240km route, the longest stage in this year’s tour. Sacha Modolo (Lampre-Merida) took the win, with Benjamin Giraud (Team Marseille 13 KTM) in third.
“It was a straight shot to the finish but with a slight drag til about 250 to go, it was a solid go. The boys rode strong, even after 240km leaving it all out there and giving me the best chance at the finish,” Jones said.
Drapac took control of the front of the field at the 4km to the finish, with Lampre-Merida following. With the final corner at 1.8km to the line, Graeme Brown and his sound tour experience had the Red Drapac train in key position out of the corner. Jones was set to battle that final 500 meters.
“We had a perfect position, as Graeme got me exactly where I needed to be. I was very hungry after that last couple of days so I am pleased with today’s sprint. I want to get us to the top of the podium in the next few days,” Jones added.
Team Captain Graeme Brown is pleased with the team cohesiveness and team execution in today’s stage.
“We have be striving all year for the collective team work approach. We are now at the point where we are able to truly execute on the race course. Today was a good example of that team work,” Brown said. “Everyone seems to be recovering well and we will push for that stage win.”
Tomorrow’s stage (191km) looks to showcase another stellar field sprint.
