André Greipel moved ahead of Alexander Kristoff on the victory list of 2014 when he won yesterday's GP Jef Scherens. The sprint win came at the end of a dominant performance by Lotto Belisol.

André Greipel has won for the fifteenth time this season. Yesterday he sprinted to the victory in the GP Jef Scherens in Louvain. Lotto Belisol controlled the race from the start. After some attempts with Boris Vallée, a front group of fourteen riders was formed with Kris Boeckmans and Sean De Bie. Six riders would join them later, with Kenny Dehaes.

Four laps from the end Bjorn Leukemans set up a counterattack of seven. Jonas Van Genechten and André Greipel were part of it. The peloton didn’t let them go and because of this action the leaders were within reach.

In the last laps there were some new attacks, Jonas Van Genechten was active in that phase. The group of five with Van Genechten was caught with three kilometers to go. Lotto Belisol prepared the bunch sprint and André Greipel finished it off perfectly.

"We had the race all day in our hands," Greipel told Directvelo. "This is a deserved victory. The race was not easy. There was really no time to recover. You always had to stay focused. It worked well for us today. At one point, we had three men in the lead group! It's a big collective performance. Although there were only four, the train worked well in the end. I'm really happy to finish the job.

"Next week I will ride the Koolskamp and Impanis races and then I go to Worlds. It is always a pride to wear the jersey of the national team and to be selected for the World Championships. I'll do the job for the national team. There are stronger riders than me for this kind of route. John Degenkolb and Simon Geschke will both be protected riders."

“Oliver Naesen rode on the front of the bunch until one and a half kilometer to go," sports director Kurt van de Wouver said. "Then Sibi [Marcel Sieberg] took over and after the last turn it was up to Jonas Van Genechten. André was in third position at that moment, he won.

"On paper, we had the strongest team at the start. But that does not make the race easy. Everyone is waiting for us and looks at us. So we could only lose today. We did not receive help from anyone, so it makes it a more difficult race.

"The goal was to have someone in every break because it took away a bit of pressure. With Boeckmans and De Bie front, we had two guys capable of winning the race. Greipel and Van Genechten also attacked because it I had told them that if Leukemans attacked, he had to join him.

"For us, the race went perfectly. With two laps to go, given the situation, we decided to play the card of Greipel's sprint. I think I can be a happy sports director.

"We never lost control of the race. We didn’t have to ride in the peloton because we had strong riders in front. The team is in the winning mood wit the victory of Greipel in the Brussels Cycling Classic, the victory of Van Genechten in Fourmies and the stage win of Adam Hansen in the Vuelta.”
