The Flemish spring classics are succeeding fast this time of year. After the E3 Prijs Vlaanderen-Harelbeke on Friday, Gent-Wevelgem follows next on Sunday. The Gent-Wevelgem is the second WorldTour race of the season in Belgium. Riding in their home country Lotto Belisol will apply a two-pronged strategy with André Greipel and Jürgen Roelandts.
Gent-Wevelgem is 238 km long and includes ten hills, with the riders climbing the Kemmelberg twice. Weather conditions have already been a spoilsport for cycling races a few times this season; there was the cancellation of Kuurne-Brussels-Kuurne and the atypical course of Milan-San Remo, possibly Gent-Wevelgem won’t be spared either. Snow and freezing temperatures are predicted. Reportedly, the organization has an alternative route should the need arise.
Should the race come down to a sprint decision, a showdown between Lotto-Belisol rider André Greipel, Mark Cavendish (Omega Pharma-Quick Step) and Peter Sagan (Cannondale) might be on the cards. André Greipel previews the race of Sunday.
“I am well prepared, but I cannot ride my bike like I would like to in the cold. For Sunday they predict winter weather again. It was the same last Sunday in Milan-San Remo and then I just don’t have the same condition I normally have. I don’t think anybody is looking forward to riding in the freezing cold and snow again. Milan-San Remo is now already five days ago. On Monday I was in bed because I was feeling a bit ill, but I feel recovered now. I’ve done some easy training during the week, we’ll see on Sunday. The ideal scenario is that it stays dry and I expect that the rest of the riders feel the same. A group will ride away after the Kemmelberg and this group will normally make it to the finish. We’ll see how big the group is and I think Jürgen [Roelandts] is also ready for it and I also hope to be in the group after the Kemmelberg.”
