André Greipel came in fourth on the fifth stage in the Tour de France today as the best Lotto-Belisol finisher.
The finish was marred by a crash in the bunch just behind the sprinters in which Lotto Belisol rider Jurgen Van den Broeck was involved. The top five of the GC remains unchanged, so Simon Gerrans (Orica-GreenEDGE) keeps the yellow jersey.
“Today’s race was very fast and agitating,” Greipel said when explaining how the stage unfolded. “All Lotto- Belisol riders gave their best during the chase for the five escapees today. In the last two kilometres Adam Hansen stepped up the pace. The final km was very chaotic and we had to sprint against the wind. I had to brake for an instant so I lost the track of Greg Henderson. It was the first real bunch sprint of the Tour and the team did very well. Too bad I just couldn’t finish the good work.”
