Known as the fourth link in the famous Lotto Belisol sprint train, Marcel Sieberg has played an instrumental part in Andre Greipel's success. In 2015, the lanky German hopes to contribute to more success for his fast compatriot.
In his tenth season as a professional, Marcel Sieberg has confirmed his reputation as a reliable domestique. Furthermore, he managed to use one of his few opportunities to achieve some personal success.
"Actually, I'm satisfied with my season although there were some results that were not satisfactory," Sieberg told radsport-news.com.
Things were more than satisfactory for the 32-year-old at the start of the season at the Tour of Qatar which he finished in sixth place. But when asked to point out his personal highlights in 2014, Sieberg again showed that team success is more important than personal results.
"It was the German championships where we managed to win the title with Andre Greipel for the second year in a row although we again only had two-rider team," said Sieberg.
Also in the 2014 season, the fast allrounder was indispensable at the side of his best friend Greipel in the Tour de France where the sprinter again reached the target of a stage win. "The Tour was a high and low at the same time," said Sieberg about the race where the team achieved two stage victories, with Tony Gallopin taken the second one and spending a day in yellow.
On the other hand, the team lost Greipel's final lead-out man Greg Henderson very early. "So we were only represented by four, five riders in the sprints and in the Tour counts every rider that is still there at the end," said Sieberg before adding that "from time to time we also simply lacked a bit of luck."
That was evident in the spring classics where the Belgian WorldTour team had little success on the cobbles and to top it all, their captain Greipel broke his collarbone in Ghent-Wevelgem. "We had expected more from the classics," said Sieberg who missed the Tour of Flanders due to cold and fever.
In the coming season - Sieberg's fifth in Marc Sergeant's team - the lanky German again wants to contribute to many wins for the team.
"With the team, I want to win a big victory. Furthermore, I am looking forward to many exciting sprint finishes where we hopefully will have our entire sprint train at our disposal again," he said.
