The promised battle for General Classification was effectively annulled by stage winner Manuel Quinziato of Italy, whose presence in a three-man breakaway guaranteed its success by the presence of his teammates Greg Van Avermaet and Philipe Gilbert of Belgium in the first chasing group.

These mathematical factors decided the style of racing, and provided riders few opportunities to advance in the Top-10, but Grivko found some spare seconds and passed Michael Rogers of Australia into 6th overall, 1:54 behind Tim Wellens of Belgium and just 55 seconds off the podium.
