Having finished third in last year's edition of the race, Andriy Grivko again proved that he is perfectly suited to the Eneco Tour when he finished fourth in this year's race. However, the Ukrainian faced a tough test in the final stage as Greg Van Avermaet desperately tried to relagate him to fifth.
One year ago Andriy Grivko finished on the podium in the Eneco Tour. Having just finished a successful Tour de France, the Ukrainian hoped to improve on that performance in this year's race.
Grivko did a consistent race to finish fourth overall but went into the final stage with much at stake. Greg Van Avermaet had started the day just one second behind the Ukrainian and so he had to stay glued to the Belgian's wheel all day, including in the final sprint.
“Van Avermaet wanted that second back all day," he said. "Thanks to Borut [Bozic] for the work at the front to keep me high on GC."
Borut Bozic stayed with Grivko until the race was safely back on a 3k flat stretch to the finish, and the Ukrainian rider held fast to Van Avermaet’s wheel in the dangerous last meters of the stage when any mistake could be ruinous.
