Trek are trying to become one of the sport’s greatest teams, shifting to Grand Tour riding in 2017 once Classics star Fabian Cancellara retires. Tejay van Garderen and Vincenzo Nibali are both transfer targets. For Cancellara, he may seek to ride his first ever Giro in his last year.

“Let’s just say that the wish for the final year in his career is to compete in some of the biggest races,” Trek manager Luca Guercilena told Cyclingnews.

“An alternative program is certainly something that is on Fabian’s mind and the Giro could be an option. The race starts with a prologue and that’s certainly interesting for someone like him. It’s not an easy target as he’s not the youngest but it’s something we may want to try.”

La Gazzetta dello Sport said that Segafredo would come on board as a co-sponsor for 2016, something Guercilena wouldn’t confirm or deny to Cyclingnews. Should they come on board, the US team with some Italian riders would become much more Italian. It helps that Italy’s bets rider is also on the market for 2017 too…

“In 2017, it’s in our interests to have a big name. Of course, Vincenzo is a very talented rider and one that we’d love to have. We know how hard the competition in negotiations can be though and of course, we have an entire season still in front of us. He’s someone that we’re looking at, but there are others too. At the moment, it’s just a nice idea in our minds.”

Trek only have one US rider this year, Kiel Reijnen, despite being an American registered team and sposored by Trek, an American company. Trek may want another US rider in 2017, with BMC's Tejay van Garderen a likely target, after being linked with the team this offseason.

“With Trek, an American company, a rider like Tejay is always on our radar. All I would say is never say never. At this stage we just wait and see. We’ve been busy with our second season at Trek Factory Racing, and we’re planning for next year.”
