Despite the Giro not being fantastic for Cannondale, things are still going fairly well. Moreno Moser and Nate Brown have taken third and fourth respectively on stages, Davide Formolo still has a shot at winning the Youth Classification and Rigo Uran is still in the top ten on GC despite crashing during the time trial, which cost him lots of time.
“The team spirit is still very high,” Cannondale sport director Fabrizio Guidi told VeloNews. “Things didn’t go as hoped in the time trial, but the hardest part of the Giro is still ahead of us. We are still fighting for everything in this Giro.”
“The crash cost us about a minute and a half, but the good news is Rigo is not injured,” Guidi said. “We have not been able to see the real Rigo yet. He is in very good condition, but it’s been a strange Giro. Normally we have a big summit already in the first half, but so far, we have not seen a true test. We have had a few hints, and Rigo has been there when he needs to be.”
Guidi also spoke on Formolo’s chances of taking the Maglia Bianca in his second Giro. He needs to make up around five minutes on Etixx-QuickStep’s Bob Jungels. Guidi says he will need to focus on helping Uran first.
“The most important thing for Davide is to pass each stage without trouble, and without having a bad day,” Guidi said. “If he has the legs, he will help Rigo, and if the situation is right, he can have a chance. If the jersey comes, it comes.”
