The thirteenth Vuelta stage takes the peloton from Calatayud to Tarazona. The route is far from flat. There are three official climbs, after the last top there are still 33.5 kilometres to the finish. That doesn’t mean it’s not uphill anymore though, on the contrary. It seems like a big opportunity for a breakaway.
"Indeed, it seems to be a perfect day to be in a breakaway, but in cycling nothing is 100% sure and that’s what makes it so exciting. Nonetheless, the most probable scenario is that an escapee will take the victory so I expect war in the beginning of the stage," Adam Hansen said. "There is a slight chance that Giant – Alpecin will ride for John Degenkolb, but I don’t think they’ll get much support chasing down the breakaway.
"We all have friends in other teams, so of course we talk to each other before the start to see who else wants to join a breakaway. The most important aspect is that the riders in the group are dedicated, then the number of riders is less important. I expect the group to dissolve on the last climb and that it will be a cat-and-mouse game afterwards with surprise attacks in the finale.
"If thirteen is my lucky number? I never thought about it, but it might be after today (laughs).”
