For the first time, the Tour de l'Eurometropole was a one-day race rather than a stage race of four or five days in 2016. The organizer, the Royale Cazaeau de Pedale Templeuve , was looking for a buyer but as the search failed, they opted for a reduction to just a single day. The race that takes place on the first Sunday of October was a 1.1 event in 2016. From 2017, it will move to the Hors Category on the UCI calendar and a new race will be born: Omloop Eurometropool, a 1.1 race which will be held the day before between Nieuwpoort and Poperinge.
Club de Poperinge is the organizer of the new event. The two races will both count for an official classification.
The first Omloop Eurometropool will take place on Saturday, September 30 over 175 km and the 77th Tour de l'Eurométropole will be held next day, on Sunday October 1, over 185 km between La Louvière and Tournai.
In 2016, Dylan Groenewegen won in Tournai after a very controversial sprint against Oliver Naesen. The race started in Poperinge.
