Sergio Henao looked really strong in his first race for almost four months at the Tour de Suisse but his race came to a premature halt when he crashed during the warm-up for today's time trial. Having been diagnosed with a broken patella, the Colombian won't make it onto the Sky Tour de France roster.
Sergio Henao was unable to start the stage seven time trial at the Tour de Suisse following an accident during a pre-stage training ride.
The Colombian was taken to hospital on Friday morning where x-rays revealed a fractured patella.
Team Sky Doctor, Steve Baynes, said: “Unfortunately Sergio had an accident this morning which resulted in a fractured patella which will require surgery. We will now be looking for the best-possible treatment for Sergio.
“Of course he is very disappointed but remains upbeat and will now focus on making a full recovery.”
The Team Sky rider had been sitting 15th overall heading into a tough trio of final stages, with a great chance to advance up the general classification.
Pete Kennaugh was the top Team Sky finisher on the undulating 24.5km course in Worb and moving to 18th position overall heading into the weekend.
Sports Director Dan Frost added: “Sergio was riding really well and it’s such a shame to see him leave the race in this way. He was our card for the GC and I’m confident he could have pulled off a really good result.
“It goes without saying everyone at the team wishes him a speedy recovery.
“Pete did a good job today and we’ll look to support him as much as we can during the weekend and see what we can do.”
