Having been sidelined by his team due to abnormal blood values, Sergio Henao was fully cleared by his Sky team and returned to action in the Tour de Suisse. Unfortunately, he was involved in a horrific crash during the warm-up for the time trial but as he rehabilitation is going well, he now hopes to be back on his bike in December.
Sky rider Sergio Henao is back in Colombia after his serious accident in June at the Tour de Suisse where he was hit by a car. As a consequence, he suffered a severe fracture in his right knee at the level of the patella.
Since then, Henao has gone through an intense and painful recovery process once he underwent surgery in Pamplona (Spain). He has stayed in that city until September 18 when he had a new appointment with the surgeon and medical staff who treated him. He has now been allowed to return home, after analysis indicated good solidification of the patella and opened the door for continued recovery in Colombia.
So Henao has returned to his native Rionegro and tells revistamondociclistico.com that he is "happy to be back in my country, in my home, with family. This allows me to recharge the batteries physically and mentally and continue my rehabilitation."
"The doctor who did the reconstruction of the patella found that the whole process of healing and bone solidification proceeds perfectly and that I can continue the rehabilitation process with physical therapy to restore the strength to the leg. That's what allowed me and my team to decide to go home.
"The Antioquia Indeportes facilities have given me all the necessary collaboration and I work together with my girlfriend Carolina. I follow the same routine as I did in Spain and hope to make full recovery very soon, knowing that all bone and knee components are in good condition.
"Of course I want to be on the bike again tomorrow but I have no deadline. I do not want to force things and I intend to respect all the time needed for complete rehabilitation. Logically, I hope to be riding again in December or January and be part of the 2015 season.
"The team is aware of my health every day. I have had full cooperation in the necessary aspects. I am fortunate to belong to a team like this where I have not been left on my own. On the contrary, I wanted to be present at training camps and team events but the team understands that I cannot be there 100%.
"These are things that happen and cyclists are vulnerable but fortunately we have our families and clsoe friends that help us find enough value to overcome these hardshipes. Fortunately, I still have a lot of energy to keep fighting."
