A natural climber with excellent puncheur ability, Sergio Henao is regarded as a future Grand Tour contender. He'll contend in Tour 2014 as a domestique though, for Chris Froome, as the Colombian tells Biciciclismo.com.
On his early season schedule, "I'll begin to race in Mallorca and then I'm scheduled to race the Tour of Oman," Henao said, "then, similar to last year's calendar, Tirreno-Adriatico, Tour of the Basque Country and the Ardennes."
Presumably, in Basque Country and the Ardennes will see Henao been given leadership opportunities. He got a 2nd in Fleche Wallonne this year and 3rd in Basque Country GC with a stage win too. The Colombian likes LBL among those races most, though, "In my mind I would like to win a Monument. All the Ardennes classic races are my favorite and I'm good in them, but the one that strikes me is the Liege."
And after the Ardennes, Henao will skip the Giro to utilize a Tenerife training camp, and after that there's Dauphine, and finally the Tour. "After racing the Giro and the Vuelta I want to contest the Tour. It's the biggest race and I hope to give a high level preformance along side Froome. In this team there is always pressure, more so after winning the Tour de France the past two years. While all other teams want to beat us , our goal is to win again. " Henao confirms.
The schedule for the Colombian after Tour is not confirmed yet. Among them, Vuelta is a possibility as it's a good preparation for the Worlds and Lombardia. Although, similar strategy didn't work well for Henao this year, as he's not competitive at all in Vuelta, and didn't crank top 10 in both Lombardia and Worlds.
While compatriot Uran left the team for OPQS, Henao saw another compatriot, precisely his cousin, Sebastian Henao joining the Sky team. Going away along with Uran, is the good friendship between the Colombian climbers, as they are roommates, "We'll now each defend different colors, we will be rivals, although that will be a little weird for me." says Henao. Of course, Uran's departure also means more opportunity for Henao, too.
