Davide Formolo and Ryder Hesjedal were among the riders caught up in a mass crash that occurred just before the three kilometer zone on the 13th stage of the Giro d’Italia. The flat stage was complicated by wet roads, making for another dramatic day in Italy.
“Up until the crash, our day was perfect,” said sport director Charly Wegelius. “We knew the rain in the final would be dangerous. We were hoping to avoid crashes. Unfortunately the crash happened at the front, which was where we were riding.”
Hesjedal managed to get up slightly more quickly than Formolo. The 2012 Giro d’Italia champion finished in the maglia rosa group, 40 seconds behind the stage winner. Formolo benefitted from the assistance of his teammates, who chased alongside of him in pursuit of finish line in Lido di Jesolo.
“Davide is sore,” said Wegelius. “That’s his second crash in two days. It’s not good to fall off twice in two days. He had his teammate help to chase, and they did a good job to limit his losses all things considered.”
Hesjedal and Formolo were far from the only riders impacted by the late race incident.
“The crash impacted a lot of the favorites,” said Wegelius. “We weren’t immune to that.”
The Giro d’Italia continues on Saturday with a 59.4 kilometer time trial that begins in Treviso and ends in Valdobbiadene.
