Ever since making history in the 2012 Giro, Ryder Hesjedal has struggled to reach the glory of that May in 2012. But in 2015, he showed signs of coming back to life, recovering from a poor opening week too finish fifth overall in the Giro. In 2016, he is back for what he admits may be his final crack at the Maglia Rosa.

“I have to look at things,” he told VeloNews on Thursday, when asked if his season with Trek-Segafredo would be his last as a pro. “For me, I’m just enjoying where I’m at right now, not making any hard plans in respect to that. But it’s something I’ve been thinking about, it’s on the table. I signed a one-year deal here. I have to decide if I want to continue or not.”

Hesjedal is never great in the opening week, but once his diesel engine gets going, there is little stopping him, meaning he is a monster in the final week of a Grand Tour.

“Once I get about 2,500 Ks in my legs, hopefully in the last thousand [kilometers] I’ll be one of the strongest guys, if not the strongest. That’s all I can hope for,” he said.
