Kenny De Ketele and Moreno De Pauw are more than ever the top favorites for the victory in the 76th Lotto Six Day Flanders-Ghent. Halfway through the six-day race, the Belgian duo is back in the lead. The only Belgian pair in Ghent has a total of 230 points.
On Wednesday Keisse and Viviani started as leaders but Cavendish and Wiggins gradually sped up and moved to the top of the standings. Those two pairs were the only ones to be in the same lap before the start of the first madison of 45 minutes and six laps. The British pair had 171 points, nine more than Keisse and Viviani.
Kenny De Ketele and Moreno De Pauw were on the defensive but in the timed disciplines, they are unbeatable. The tandem of Topsport Vlaanderen-Baloise clocked a time of 8:48 in the flying lap, 0.03 second from track record.
At the start of the madison, the top favorites kept a close eye on each other until Kenny De Ketele and Moreno De Pauw took a lap in the finale.
With a convincing performance De Ketele and De Pauw were back in the lead. Keisse-Viviani and Wiggins-Cavendish had to response. With this victory, De Ketele-De Pauw moved back into the lead with a bonus lap
After the break, the Kuipke velodrome screamed "Iljoooooooo, Iljooooooo, Iljooooooooo," when the local hero won the first derny series of the third night after an impressive battle with Mark Cavendish.
Wherever they could, Keisse-Viviani scored points. Viviani took the Super Sprint ahead of Lindsay Vylder who got a bonus lap together with his partner Leif Lampater and the pair was now just two laps behind the leaders, De Ketele-De Pauw.
The pace was again fast in the second madison of the evening. In the final of the 35’ race, De Ketele-De Paue were put under pressure when the Australians Scotson-Meyer attacked. A little later, Wiggins and Cavendish tried but their attack was neutralized. Five laps from the finish, De Vylder-Lampater made a move. Keisse-Viviani responded and took second place.
Keisse beat Cavendish in the derny finale, Morkov won the scratch and Ghys was the best in the final Super Sprint.
De Ketele and Peacock have a total of 230 points. The Belgian-Italian duo Iljo Keisse and Elia Viviani is in second place with 215 points, followed by British world champions, Bradley Wiggins and Mark Cavendish (204 points). The Australians Cameron Meyer and Callum Scotson (122 points) are one lap behind. The Belgian-German tandem Lindsay Vylder and Leif Lampater (142 points) are two laps behind in fifth place.
