Matthias Brandle has set a new Hour record last week. The 24-year old Austrian beat the record set by Jens Voigt last September. After an hour, Brandle covered 51.852 meters. However, Brandle’s IAM Cycling owner, Michel Thetaz isn’t confident that the record will stand for long.

“Wiggings will beat it, no problem. But Brandle’s name will be in the books forever”, Thetaz told Cycling Weekly. He later added, “He’s a young rider, that’s the clever aspect of it.  Lot of guys with the same strength will try now, but it will be tough for them to beat Matthias’ record.”

While Thetaz thinks that Wiggins and maybe a few others will beat his riders record, he don’t think that they will crush it.

“It would be a marginal gain, a small distance ahead. It won’t be easy to get 52 or 53 kilometers. Some riders will hesitate to go for.

Matthias’ timing was perfect at the end of the season. It won’t be easy as we go further into the winter. I don’t see many riders trying to ride the hour for the next few months. He was clever to do it when he did it, off of Voigt’s record and the road season.”

Besides being the first Austrian, Brandle also became the youngest cyclist to set the hour record since 1958, when Roger Riviere did it at age 22.
