Is there any doubt that the Italians know how, and love, to stage great events, and as a result enhance the impact of the race? If there was any question, the presentation for the 2016 Giro d’Italia has once again provided tangible and ample evidence. Taking place within the walls of the Milan-Expo 2015, the cream of the world cycling crop, including the UCI president Bryan Cookson, were present, and offered a show of unparalleled grandeur.
Though many of the details had already been leaked before the show, Michel Thétaz, founder of IAM Cycling and CEO of IAM Funds, attended the official presentation, and made an effort to express his initial impressions of the 2016 edition:
“I find this a balanced Giro, despite the fact that there are two or three crazy stages; but who knows whether IAM Cycling will manage to win its first victory bouquet in a three week grand tour. In any case, the circumstances appear to be favorable, especially looking at what the first stages in the Netherlands will be. Our sprinters will be motivated for those finishes.”
IAM Cycling directeur sportif Mario Chiesa had a similar view, highlighting especially Matteo Pelucchi as a main protagonist.
“The 2016 Giro will be perfect for complete riders. There is certainly something for every talent. We do not yet know precisely which riders we will take, but Matteo Pelucchi certainly should have a shot at going for the victory in those stages reserved for the sprinters.”
After taking the opportunity to chat with colleagues Nibali and Viviani, Pelucchi was happy to discuss his chances.
“Yes, this is a difficult Giro for a rider like me, but I am motivated to prepare well. I am convinced that so long as I come with my best condition, then the opportunities will arise.”
