“Daryl (Impey) is definitely one of the riders in the team that can do well here. But we have a few guys in Pieter Weening, Simon Yates and Christian Meier who can also have a general classification result here."

Having been cleared to race yesterday, Daryl Impey is ready to return to racing when he lines up in the Tour of Alberta on Tuesday. The South African is part of a strong Orica-GreenEDGE that is loaded with fast riders.

Daryl Impey, the first South African to wear the Tour de France yellow jersey, will return to racing at the Tour of Alberta starting this Tuesday.

The Canadian six-day tour will be Impey’s first race since the Criterium du Dauphine in June having been cleared of any wrong doing in a recent investigation by the South African Institute for Drug Free Sport.

The 29-year-old will be one of a number of options in a well-rounded ORICA-GreenEDGE outfit.

The eight riders for the Tour of Alberta are: Aidis Kruopis, Christian Meier, Daryl Impey, Leigh Howard, Mathew Hayman, Matthew Goss, Peiter Weening and Simon Yates.

Sport director Matt Wilson is confident the group provides options for the unpredictable race.

“Daryl (Impey) is definitely one of the riders in the team that can do well here,” Wilson said.

“But we have a few guys in Pieter Weening, Simon Yates and Christian Meier who can also have a general classification result here.

“It’s a really open sort of race, on paper there is no really decisive days that you would say this is going to make or break the race.

“It’s one of those tours that is going to suit an attacking and aggressive style of rider, someone who makes the right moves.”

The goal will be dual-focused for ORICA-GreenEDGE, a good general classification result and stage wins in their sights.

“I think we have a very well rounded team and we are going to be aggressive and go out there and try to win,” Wilson said.

“In other races we might just target stage wins or just general classification but here we are definitely looking at both.

“It’s one of those races that if you attack and go after every stage you are going to be well placed overall.

“That is they way we are going to approach the race, we are going to try and take every opportunity.”
