Despite his impressive performances in Commonwealth Games and recently concluded Tour of Britain, Alex Dowsett remains modest about his chances in the upcoming World Championships in Ponferrada, where he is due to line-up in both team and individual time trial events.
Dowsett became a part of a three-man breakaway which impressively held off a chase from Omega Pharma – Quick Step and this way became a leader of the Tour of Britain following its sixth stage. The 25-year old Briton couldn’t enjoy holding the yellow jersey for long as next day’s hilly affair proved to be too demanding for his current climbing abilities, but his showing in the home stage event was still a strong evidence of his high disposition.
The Movistar rider acknowledged, however, that he is uncertain about his form ahead of both team and individual time trial events at World Championships as he has been training climbing-wise since his participation in the Commonwealth Games.
“I don’t really know how I’ll go in the individual,” he told Cycling Weekly today.
“Since the Commonwealth Games training wise I’ve been focusing more on the top end and I’ve been able to climb a bit better, so haven’t really ridden a time trial bike. I’ve just been training hard."
“For sure it will be better than last year’s worlds. I was sick as a dog there and six and a half minutes down [5-47].”
Running out of his current contract with Movistar by the end of 2014 season, Dowsett is yet to reveal his plans for future in professional cycling.
