A very eventful day in the 20th Vattenfall Cyclassics (UCI WorldTour), won by local hero André Greipel (LTS), ended in misfortune for the Movistar Team as Jesús Herrada, winner of a stage in the Tour du Limousin only four days prior, finished his race in Germany with an injury.
In the latter of two crashes splitting the bunch in the final 30km, the Spaniard suffered a big blow alongside Juanjo Lobato, who wasn’t heavily affected, which checks at a medical center in Hamburg confirmed as a fracture in the middle third of his left-hand collarbone.
The Spaniard will likely travel back home tomorrow to undergo new checks to confirm or rule out the need for surgery and establish a recovery plan for him.
The crash ruined the Movistar Team’s chances to shine after a long day protecting Lobato, early with a fine Alex Dowsett, both in the break and at the front of the field before the climbs of Waseberg, and later on with Castroviejo, Herrada himself and Ion Izagirre. Jasha Sütterlin was the first Movistar rider in 26th spot.
