After his third places in the European Games road race and in the national TT championships, Petr Vakoc (Etixx-QuickStep) confirmed his excellent conditon when he won today's Czech road race championships. The youngster managed to distance Leopold König (Sky) in the finale while Frantisek Sisr (Dukla Praha) won the sprin for third.
After he finished his first Giro d'Italia, Petr Vakoc has been totally unstoppable and this made him one of the big favourites for the Czech road race championships and he fully lived up to expectations when he came out on top on the 199km course in the Slovakian city of Zilina.
As usual, the race was held as a joint event with the Slovakians and with the absence of defending champion Zdenek Stybar, it was up to Vakoc to keep the jersey within the Etixx-QuickStep ranks. Being one of the strongest, he escaped in the finale to form a three-rider group with Slovakian Peter Sagan and Leopold König.
Vakoc was unable to keep up with Sagan who rode away with the Slovakian title, but that didn't matter as he distanced König by 11 seconds to take the Czech jersey. 1.08 later Frantsek Sisr won the sprint for third.
Vakoc will take a break after a heavy racing burden and so it is unclear when he will wear the jersey for the first time.
