Tim Wellens may be known as a climber but after animating all the Ardennes classics, he is obviously in great condition and so he shone in today's Belgian TT championships. The Lotto Belisol youngster took a surprise second which proves that he is ready for his upcoming goals at the Giro d'Italia.
Tim Wellens won the silver medal at the Belgian Championship time trial in Hooglede-Gits today. The pros had to cover three laps of 14.8 kilometers, good for a total distance of 44.4 kilometers.
Wellens set a time of 56'42". Only Kristof Vandewalle did better – with sixteen seconds – and that way he won the Belgian time trial title for the third time in a row. Pieter Serry went home with bronze, he finished at a few hundreds of seconds of Wellens.
"I didn't expect this result," he said. "I came to Hooglede with top five as my goal. The course was pretty technical, with some sharp curves. There was also a lot of wind. Bart Leysen, my sports director, advised me very well and told me on which parts I definitely shouldn't let my tempo down.
"I had the fourth intermediate time for a while, so I was on schedule. My last lap was very fast and so I became second. I obviously got well out of the classic period. Now I'm focusing on the Giro."
