Ion Izagirre has unveiled his schedule for 2017 in the Noticias de Gipuzkoa newspaper. The Spanish rider broke his contract with Movistar to seize the opportunity at Bahrain - Merida but he explains that he is still on good terms with Eusebio Unzue, the manager of Movistar.
The 2016 season went much better than expected. Winner of the Tour de Romandie prologue, he finished third in the race after helping his leader Nairo Quintana to win. He was second of the Volta ao Algarve at the beginning of the year between Geraint Thomas and Alberto Contador and he then took fifth place in Paris-Nice and won the Grand Prix Miguel Indurain. The winner of the 2015 Tour de Pologne also secured a second place in the Tour de Suisse, the title of Spanish Time Trial Champion and a win in the 20th stage of the Tour de France in Morzine.
In 2017, he will barely change his program which will be little less loaded at the beginning of the season. He will replace the race in Algarve by the Vuelta a Andalucia as Bahrain - Merida will skip the Portuguese race. From there, he will go to Paris-Nice, the Tour of the Basque Country which he skipped i 2016 due to gastroenteritis. The Ardennes classics and the Tour de Romandie are the final races before a training camp on Mount Teide (Tenerife) which will prepare him for the Tour de Suisse and the Tour de France.
