Javier Moreno of the Movistar Team will not join the rest of the team for the season opener in Australian, The Tour Down Under. He will instead start his season in the Vuelta a Mallorca. His ambitions for this season especially have something to do with the Giro.
But before the Giro the season has to start somewhere and for the 30-year old Spaniard it will be on the Island of Mallorca. He will join the Movistar team in the fight for wins in the tour.
"This season starts later for me, since I will not go to Australia. I will make my debut in Mallorca and if everything turns out the way I want, I’ll continue in Vuelta a Andalucia," said Moreno.
Even though Moreno will start his season a bit later than the rest of the squad doesn’t necessarily mean it will be easier for him he says.
"That the Tour Down Under is not in my calendar does not mean it's going to be an easier season start for me. This winter I have been working hard to shine on Mallorca, but especially on home soil [Andalucia], which this year has a very interesting tour and a share of luxury, "he adds.
At the moment it won’t be Moreno you’ll see at the presentation for the Vuelta a Espana. He isn’t going there to be a part of it, as he’ll focus on the Giro instead.
"Overlooking the rest of the year, there is also a change regarding La Vuelta. My goal is to be a part of the nine, who will be going to the Giro and to get my chance of winning at some stage," says the Andalusian rider.
And he is optimistic about the Giro. Team captains Alejandro Valverde and Nairo Quintana won’t drive the tour, which gives the team some open chances for pursuing their individual chances.
"The plan is that neither Nairo Quintana nor Alejandro Valverde will go to the Giro, so the team will have more individual opportunities, "says Javi Moreno.
