The German-Danish pair of Christian Grasmann and Jesper Mørkøv once again made a great use of their position of slightly underrated underdogs to regain the most ground on home crowd favourites Rasmussen and Mørkøv on a quiet Sunday afternoon. Talking with CyclingQuotes, the 26-year old European champion in derny race admitted that while the podium is absolutely within their reach, they will try turn that situation into their advantage and sneak away with a victory in the 2015 edition of the Six Days of Copenhagen,
Caught in the middle of action on Sunday, Mørkøv admitted that even though everyone is visibly fatigued due to a furious pace of racing on the previous evening, his own feelings were positive and latest development of a situation in the general classification really motivated him.
„Yesterday [on Saturday] racing was faster than in the world championships, so everyone is a little bit tired. That's normal,” the 26-year old Dane told CyclingQuotes.
„The feeling is really good. We were not favourites for a victory, we were not favourites for a podium, but like I said before we were jokers who could end up fifth as well as taking the victory. Now we're only one lap down on Sunday, which is really good.”
Asked if he believed that finishing his home Six Day event on a podium was possible, the European derny champion agreed, actually hinting that he does not rule out sneaking away with a victory on Tuesday if the tactical situation still works to their advantage.
„I really think that the podium is possible,” Mørkøv said. „In the first two days there were three teams really watching each other, but team no. 9 was imploding a little bit yesterday and now it's really 7 [Rasmussen-Morkov] and 6 [Lampater-Kalz] looking at each other, so I think it will be our chance.”
„The problem is that we don't have that many points so we will have to take the laps. I hope we can maybe stay in and be on the same lap before the last day and then we can attack while they will be looking at each other and then we maybe can do it.”
Reflecting on an opportinity to race if front of home crowd, the 26-year old Dane revealed that such situation motivates him just as much as fighting against his older and more decorated brother, still regarded by him as the best track specialist in the world.
„When you're in your home town and you have your own crowd – my family is also today as well as Michael's – it's really motivating for us.
„We have done it for a couple of years and for me it's something special because I respect Alex [Rasmussen] a lot and think Michael [Morkov] is still the best track rider in the world, so to fight against them is really something special for me.”
Mørkøv also revealed that despite fatigue gaining at least one lap back was his and Grasmann's main objective for Sunday. The pair no. 14 definitely lived up to their own expectations, finishing the afternoon at the same lap as overnight leaders and taking a victory in the little chase.
„The plan for today was getting a lap back and we did that in a big chase so now I think maybe we will look if there is an opportunity in the little chase and we will try to do this again.”
