American rider Joe Dombrowski will be selected to compete the third grand tour of this season: the Vuelta a Espana. The Cannondale-Garmin rider performed in North America during the Amgen Tour fo California. He finished 4th overall and he was strong on the road of Mount Baldy. Interviewed by Velonews, he explained he did a reset this winter.
"I came into this season sort of thinking I’m starting at zero again. It’s almost like I’m kind of a neo-pro again."
Having ridden impressively in his first two years at the Continental level, Joe Dombrowski joined Team Sky. But health issues prevented him from performing in line with such expectations. But now, he added that his left leg feels just "as strong as the right now" and "it gives me a lot of confidence".
"I felt like I was just kind of finding my feet in May, June, July, in my first year. I remember Tour de Suisse I was up there on some of the mountain stages. Tour of Austria I was up there, and then right after, that’s when I was starting to have problems."
Now, he is recovered and he told he is back where it all started. "I was just so gung-ho about getting back on the bike and I’m going to show everybody."
During the Vuelta, he would like to finish it and maybe to show his talent on mountains stages. "I think it’s more going into it and gaining experience, but later in the race when I think more opportunities surface, then if I could take advantage of that, I would love that, too."
