A few days after winning the time trial title, Bob Jungels (Trek) made the double at the Luxembourg national championships for the second time in his short career when he won today's road race in commanding fashion. The youngster emerged as the strongest from a four-rider group while Ben Gastauer (Ag2r) and Pit Schlechter (Leopard) completed the podium.
In his neo-pro season, Bob Jungels made the double at the Luxembourg championships by winning both the time trial and road race to confirm his status as the future star of the country. After a disappointing performance in 2014, he repeated the feat in 2015.
Three days ago Jungels won the time trial and today he was the big favourite in the road race. He was ready right from the gun when Ben Gastauer attacked on the first climb and at the top, a 4-rider group with him, Gastauer, Joel Zangerle (Cult) and Pit Schlechter had formed.
Those four riders would never get caught and it turned into an elimination race. Zangerle was dropped with 60km of the 151.7km race in Wiltz and later Schlechter would also lose contact. Finally, Gastauer was distanced and Jungels crossed the line 1.24 ahead of the Ag2r rider while Zangerle was 4.29 adrift in third.
Jungels will wear the jersey at the Tour de France where he will make his debut this summer.
