Katusha have gone into the Vuelta a Espana with a full focus on the GC with Joaquim Rodriguez and Daniel Moreno and so today's windy, flat stage was all about staying safe. Sports director Jose Azevedo was pleased with the outcome of what could have been a dangerous stage.

Sunday’s stage 2 in the 2014 Vuelta a España rolled out of the port city of Algeciras and brought the first group sprint in a grand tour the offers few opportunities for the fast men of cycling. The 174.4 km stage to San Fernando featured a category 3 climb early on, but was mostly flat across the southern sections of Spain.

"Today's stage was dedicated to the sprinters, so for us the main thing was to keep Joaquim and Dani well out of trouble. The race was quite dangerous because the whole day we rode along the seaside and the crosswind blew continuously. Fortunately we managed to avoid crashes, only Dmitriy Kozonchuk was forced to stop in one moment, but everything was ok. In last 50 km we tried to stay in front with our leaders. It was important especially in the last kilometers. We finished this day without any problems and I am happy with it," said team director are José Azevedo.

Monday’s stage 3 is 197,8 km from Cádiz to Arcos de la Frontera. It features three category-3 rated climbs and a slight uphill rise to the finish.
